Your Love's Refrain

A writing snippet

This piece is a song that I wrote as part of my Restoration-style comedy, Love’s True Servant. The lyrics were inspired by Nat King Cole’s song “Stardust” (written by Hoagy Carmichael and Mitchell Parish), but uses early modern techniques and terminology. There is no set tune, so go ahead and use your imagination!

The dusky twilight in my heart
Creeps closer in like shadows long;
The thought of you and I apart
Converts my love to lonesome song;
The mem'ry of your love's refrain
Shall ever in my heart remain.

A field of stars so faint, recalled
The plaintive melody of love—
By this my rosy dream enthralled,
Like moonbeams streaming from above—
The mem'ry of your love's refrain
Shall ever in my heart remain.

This reverie of song and light
Consoles my heart thus sacrificed;
And roses caught by stars so bright
Show me the face of paradise;
The mem'ry of your love's refrain
Shall ever in my heart remain.

The mem'ry of your love's refrain
Shall ever in my heart remain.

Is there someone in your life that shall ever in your heart remain? Tell them how you feel with song this Valentine’s Day!
